چکیده

The oral cavity supports a complex and finely balanced consortia of microbial species, many of which co-operate within structured biofilms. These communities develop through multitudinous synergistic and antagonistic inter-species relationships. Changes in the dynamics of oral microbial populations are associated with the transition from healthy teeth and gums to dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. Understanding the ecology of oral biofilm communities, and how different species communicate within a given host, will inform new strategies for treatment and prevention of oral diseases. Advances in sequencing technologies have fuelled an increasing trend towards global genomic and proteomic approaches to determine the key factors that initiate oral diseases. Whilst metabolic profiling seeks to identify phenotypic changes of whole microbial communities; transcriptomic studies are exploring their complex interactions with each other and the host. This review discusses the most recent in vitro and in vivo studies of interspecies interactions within polymicrobial

Polymicrobial Candida biofilms: friends and foe in the oral cavity.

The role of polymicrobial biofilm infections in medicine is becoming more apparent. Increasing number of microbiome studies and deep sequencing has enabled us to develop a greater understanding of how positive and negative microbial interactions influence disease outcomes. An environment where this is particularly pertinent is within the oral cavity, a rich and diverse ecosystem inhabited by bo...

Pathogenesis of Polymicrobial Biofilms

In polymicrobial biofilms a high level of interspecies interactions occur with often detrimental effect to the host. Many chronic infections are attributed to polymicrobial biofilms which tend to exhibit increased resistance to antimicrobial therapy. Yet despite the gravity of such infections, areas of study in polymicrobial diseases are in their infancy. Thus, much work is needed to promote a ...

Different response to amine fluoride by Streptococcus mutans and polymicrobial biofilms in a novel high-throughput active attachment model.

BACKGROUND/AIMS The antimicrobial resistance of microorganisms in biofilms and the polymicrobial interactions in these biofilms that modulate resistance require novel strategies to evaluate the efficacy of caries-preventive compounds. The current study aimed to evaluate the effects of a caries-preventive agent in Streptococcus mutans and polymicrobial biofilms. METHODS We developed a novel hi...

The polymicrobial nature of biofilm infection.

The model of biofilm infection was first proposed over a decade ago. Recent scientific advances have added much to our understanding of biofilms, usually polymicrobial communities, which are commonly associated with chronic infection. Metagenomics has demonstrated that bacteria pursuing a biofilm strategy possess many mechanisms for encouraging diversity. By including multiple bacterial and/or ...

Bacterial biofilms and the pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW To review the evidence for the presence of bacterial biofilms in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and mechanisms by which they may contribute to the chronic inflammation characteristic of this disease. Lastly, to provide an overview of the current and potential future treatments for bacterial biofilms in CRS. RECENT FINDINGS Advances in the techniques for identifying biofilms ha...
